if we're not careful
if we are not careful is a compilation of found video footage from religious-based, pro-life sermons, housed in a podium. When viewing, those who approach must bow their heads to see the screen, as they are met with only their reflection in the screen and fragmented isolations of a pastor's words - an intimate exchange. The video piece is accompanied by images of isolated gestures from the speech meant to convey power, truth, and control. Encased is a tissue box clutched by aggressive hands - a gesture (in and of itself) of false sympathy. In the wake of the overturn of women's rights, if we are not careful tip-toes the line between life and living, religion and truth, bodily autonomy and control, and division and persuasion.
